A Royal Visit

IMG_2640Today, November 26th Commodore Jennifer Burger welcomed the King and Queen of Norway to the Club!

This was their only personal event during their trip to South Africa and also the last official event on their agenda. It was arranged by the Norwegian Embassy in conjunction with Gordon Knight of the Wynberg Rotary Club which has close ties with their Norwegian counterparts.

This was preceded by weeks of hard work by Gordon, the Norwegian Embassy, David Rae, the staff and volunteers of the ZV Sailing Center as well as the Club staff.

On Thursday morning the club was a hive of activity as final preparations were made; boats were rigged and the children from the local schools that participate in the ZV Sailing School’s program were sailing and swimming.

The King and Queen arrived in a 15 car cavalcade amid extremely tight security. After being welcomed to the club they proceeded to the ZV Sailing Centre where they met David Rae and those that teach the children to sail. They returned to the Club House and met those running MOT, a Norwegian sponsored charity against drug abuse.

In closing they held a press conference on the lawn.

It was a real honor for the club to receive them and we trust that they enjoyed their visit.
