MDM Team Racing 2009 Round 5
Red Eagles & Blue Dolphins will contest the final
The last of the round robin stages was held on a rainy Sunday morning with a magnificent northerly blowing into home bay providing excellent team racing and great viewing for the spectators.
The first match of the day turned out to be a rehearsal for the final scheduled for the 22nd November. The rain did not contain the fiery racing as the Eagles and Dolphins got stuck into each other. In the end the Red Eagles were too strong for the Dolphins on the day and managed to edge them out 5-4. This result ensured the Eagles a place in the final. The Eagles 420’s didn’t give the Dolphins a look-in taking them 3-0 while the Dolphins Optimist’s did the same to the Eagles Optimists, so it was left to the Lasers to determine the outcome. The Eagles Laser’s managed to edge out the Dolphins 2-1.
Going into the second match of the morning the Hurricanes knew what they had to do in order to make the final – they had to white-wash the Dragons 12-0. With this the Hurricanes would end up with equal points to the Dolphins but would progress to the final based on a superior bonus points tally. Well the Dragons were not about to gift the match to the Hurricanes and the Dragons got up on their hind legs and breathed out their last bit of fire and fought the Hurricanes all the way. In the end it was the Dragons Lasers that kept the Hurricanes at bay with a hard fought 2-1 win. The powerful Hurricane’s 420’s trounced the Dragons 3-0. The Hurricanes 420 team proved to be the strongest 420 team through the five rounds by winning 9 of their 12 flights. The Hurricanes Optimists had a fine 2-1 win over the Dragons. The Hurricanes emerged 6-3 winners but this was not enough and their mid competition slump had caught up with them.
So the final will be contested on Sunday 22nd November between the Red Eagles and the Blue Dolphins. Last year the Dolphins toped the round robin log and went on to win the final – can the Eagles do that this year or will the Dolphins turn this weekend’s defeat around and win the final. The two teams are fairly evenly matched – the Lasers have each won 7 of their 12 flights, while the Dolphins Optimists are marginally stronger than the Eagles (8 and 7 wins respectively) while the Eagles 420’s are a little better off with 8 wins to the Dolphins 6
Through the round robin stages the Hurricanes 420’s were the strongest with 9 out of 12 wins, the Knights Lasers strongest also with 9 out of 12 wins, the Knights and Dolphins Optimists were equal with 8 out of 12 wins each.
